Workshop Information
In this workshop you will learn how to plan and build a site with the NC State Theme. We will explore the Gutenberg editor within version 4.0 of the NC State Theme. Learners will follow along and build out pages as part of this workshop.
Logging In
Anyone with a Unity ID can use this website. It automatically resets itself — and deletes all new content — every night.
Keep in mind that any content populated here will be viewable by anyone with a Unity ID.
Gaining Access
- Go to https://dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu/training/wp-admin and log in with your Unity ID and password.
- You will automatically be added as an administrator to the site. This will give you full access to manage the site.
Workshop Agenda
The workshop provides an overview of getting started in WordPress. We will address the basics of logging in for the first time, adding a page, and building out content using blocks. There is also a “hands-on” portion where learners will get to practice using the Gutenberg editor.
Basics
Learn how to use the fundamental blocks that will be used on any webpage. Blocks include:
- Headings
- Paragraphs
- Lists
- Buttons
- Images
Media Library
WordPress supports the housing of the media content on your website via a Media Library. This is a powerful tool that grants the ability to manage the images, videos, and other kinds of media on your website in one place.
Media library considerations that we will cover:
- File naming
- Caption and alt-text
- Media replace plugin
- Images and PDFs
Placeholder Content
If you need to populate content during the workshop, the Placeholder Content page has text that can be used. The Media Library of this site has already been pre-populated with photography that can be used.
