Content Strategy Workshop

The goal of this hourlong workshop is to provide an overview of how to strategically communicate through a website.

Overview

This workshop focuses on the theory behind effective communication rather than the mechanics of using the NC State Theme.

We will discuss how to effectively plan a page’s content and when and how to use visual elements that take your page beyond a simple collection of paragraphs. We will also discuss two high-level approaches to presenting content: marketing pages and utility pages. Some of the ideas covered under these two topics are:

Utility Pages

  • Conveying information to readers
  • Text-based blocks in Gutenberg
  • Handling information density

Marketing Pages

  • Increasing reader awareness
  • Media-centric blocks in Gutenberg
  • Approaches to reader engagement

Note: Familiarity with the NC State Theme and using the Gutenberg editor within WordPress is helpful. If you currently maintain a WordPress site and are not familiar with these features, it is recommended you consider taking our NC State Theme and Stories for Content Maintainers workshop before attending this offering.

Resources

Page Goals Template: It’s important to plan your content before you begin the page-building process, so you can maximize the effectiveness of both the writing and the design. We do a deeper dive into this idea during the workshop, and offer a Page Goals Template that learners can use.

Upcoming Workshops

Workshops are open to anyone using the NC State web platforms. Each workshop covers similar content, but repeat attendees are welcomed.
