{"id":57,"date":"2021-02-01T09:53:34","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T09:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu\/web-platform-free-tier\/2021\/02\/01\/teaching-the-pack-maria-gallardo-williams\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T01:26:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T05:26:26","slug":"teaching-the-pack-maria-gallardo-williams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu\/web-platform-free-tier\/2021\/02\/01\/teaching-the-pack-maria-gallardo-williams\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching the Pack: Maria Gallardo-Williams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A few years ago, Maria Gallardo-Williams started a project that turned out to be visionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Gallardo-Williams, teaching professor and Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ncsu.edu\/\">College of Sciences<\/a>&#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.sciences.ncsu.edu\/\">Department of Chemistry<\/a>, hands-on laboratory work was a big part of her classes. But what about students who were pregnant, disabled or deployed with the military or otherwise couldn\u2019t physically be present in the lab?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had used videos to supplement my labs before, but I wanted to build an entire lab course that was a virtual experience so those students wouldn\u2019t be left behind,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/delta.ncsu.edu\/\">NC&#160;State DELTA<\/a> for two years to create the content and adapt the technology for a full semester of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/ncstatevrorganicchemistrylabs\/home\">online virtual reality (VR) organic chemistry labs<\/a>. They finished the labs in 2019 and tested them that fall with a small group of students. The timing turned out to be perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea that I\u2019d need these labs because of a pandemic never crossed my mind,\u201d Gallardo-Williams said. \u201cBut when in-person classes ended in spring 2020, we had the labs ready for organic chemistry students within one week, and we\u2019ve been online ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/CH222VR-Pilot-Maria-observing-students.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/CH222VR-Pilot-Maria-observing-students-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-519081\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Gallardo-Williams observes a group of students testing the VR labs in 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reimagining the Lab Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The videos allow chemistry students to immerse themselves in the lab environment, making the same decisions they would in a physical lab, with each decision impacting the next step of the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents make all the decisions, from choosing a sample onward, draw their own conclusions and write up lab reports when they finish,\u201d Gallardo-Williams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A virtual teaching assistant guides students through each lab session. Since the pandemic began, they\u2019ve been adopted by educators at at least 45 schools in seven countries around the world after Gallardo-Williams shared them on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Teachforaliving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her Twitter account<\/a>. She often uses social media to exchange ideas with fellow teachers around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of good resources in house, but sometimes you have a specific problem that nobody else at your school is dealing with,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s helpful to crowdsource solutions with people at other campuses who are having the same problem and to get ideas immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorporating technology into the classroom has long been one of Gallardo-Williams\u2019 interests. In 2017, she <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ncsu.edu\/news\/gallardo-williams-completes-delta-faculty-fellows-program\/\">completed<\/a> DELTA\u2019s Faculty Fellows Program as part of its first cohort. Lab videos<\/a> demonstrating various lab techniques and equipment that eventually became the inspiration for her VR lab project. Several of these videos have more than 10,000 views on YouTube \u2014 one on calculating theoretical yields has more than 222,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping Students Find Their Passions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gallardo-Williams loves the way her job helps her combine many of her passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She became a teacher largely because of her chemistry teacher in her last year of high school in Venezuela. \u201cShe was a strong, independent woman and explained things so clearly, and I thought, \u2018I want to do that,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve kind of always modeled myself after her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gallardo-Williams majored in chemistry and became a teaching assistant as an undergraduate. \u201cRight away, teaching was my favorite part of the job,\u201d she said. \u201cI like the lab, but teaching, to me, is more fun than anything. I live for those \u2018aha\u2019 moments when students really get it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hopes her introductory classes, which often include first- or second-year students not majoring in chemistry, help students learn to understand and appreciate chemistry. Several of these videos have more than 10,000 views on YouTube \u2014 one on calculating theoretical yields has more than 222,000.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Helping Students Find Their Passions<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Gallardo-Williams loves the way her job helps her combine many of her passions.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>She became a teacher largely because of her chemistry teacher in her last year of high school in Venezuela. \u201cShe was a strong, independent woman and explained things so clearly, and I thought, \u2018I want to do that,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve kind of always modeled myself after her.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Gallardo-Williams majored in chemistry and became a teaching assistant as an undergraduate. \u201cRight away, teaching was my favorite part of the job,\u201d she said. \u201cI like the lab, but teaching, to me, is more fun than anything. I live for those \u2018aha\u2019 moments when students really get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>She hopes her introductory classes, which often include first- or second-year students not majoring in chemistry, help students learn to understand and appreciate chemistry.
