{"id":39,"date":"2021-02-22T08:38:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T08:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu\/web-platform-free-tier\/2021\/02\/22\/finding-your-wolfpack-student-organizations\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T13:29:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T17:29:16","slug":"finding-your-wolfpack-student-organizations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu\/web-platform-free-tier\/2021\/02\/22\/finding-your-wolfpack-student-organizations\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Your Wolfpack: Student Organizations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When Pauline Bulala first arrived at NC&#160;State as a freshman, she felt a little lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone expects you to find your people right away, but that wasn\u2019t my experience,\u201d said Bulala, a senior in biological sciences. \u201cIt was kind of hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bulala reached out to her orientation leader for advice on making connections. He recommended getting involved in student organizations and helped her find some that fit her interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, Bulala helped restart the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ncstatefasa\/\">Filipino American Student Association<\/a>, joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/parnclub\">Pre-Physician Assistant\/Nursing Club<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicpack.org\/\">Catholic Campus Ministry<\/a>, and became an <a href=\"https:\/\/newstudents.dasa.ncsu.edu\/studentleadership\/ol\/\">orientation leader<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/events\/chancellors-aides\/\">Chancellor\u2019s Aide<\/a>. She\u2019s now the vice president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/orgs.ncsu.edu\/uab\/\">University Activities Board<\/a>, a student-led organization that plans a wide range of virtual and in-person student events that foster advocacy, awareness, inclusivity and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGetting involved in organizations on campus, and helping other students do so as an orientation leader, really helped me find people on my wavelength,\u201d she said. \u201cNow I love giving back to that student who\u2019s feeling the same way I did my freshman year and helping them feel like they can thrive here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Bulala-UAB-16-9.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Bulala-UAB-16-9.jpg\" alt=\"A group of students outdoors holding up wolf hands\" class=\"wp-image-519645\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Pauline Bulala (center left, in gray shirt) with fellow 2019-20 University Activities Board members.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Darrius Barrow, associate director for student engagement in the office of <a href=\"https:\/\/leadandengage.dasa.ncsu.edu\/sle\/\">Student Leadership and Engagement<\/a>, NC&#160;State has between 600 and 700 <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/\">active student organizations<\/a> at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barrow\u2019s office supports these organizations with resources like mail services and trainings on relevant topics like financial issues, technology and hosting events. They also serve as a resource to student organization leaders as questions arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations have been meeting virtually and occasionally engaging in safe outdoor events. This year they\u2019ve rolled out a <a href=\"https:\/\/flipgrid.com\/90734f95\">Virtual Involvement Fair<\/a> where students can browse short video introductions from more than 50 campus organizations and learn how to connect with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">NC&#160;State is such a big place, but getting involved can help make it feel small.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re shy about interacting with organizations until you know what they\u2019re all about, the virtual fair is a great way to get a taste of what they\u2019re doing,\u201d Barrow said. \u201cWe had more than 7,000 views on these videos last semester, which shows that students are really taking advantage of these resources and trying to get involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the wide range of options leaves you uncertain of where to start, Barrow offers a three-step process for getting involved on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Start with something academic.<\/strong> More than 300 organizations are tied to a college or academic department, so everyone can find something that connects to their academic interests.<\/li><li><strong>Find something familiar.<\/strong> Whether it\u2019s beekeeping, anime or social justice, if you have a hobby or interest, NC&#160;State probably has an organization for it. And if it doesn\u2019t, Barrow\u2019s office will help you start it.<\/li><li><strong>Try something unfamiliar.<\/strong> Find an interest or activity you\u2019re curious about but have never engaged in. Members of the Sailing Club at NC&#160;State participate in the 2020 Sailpack Regatta.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balance and Fulfillment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important aspect is finding the balance that is right for you. \u201cJoining an organization does not mean you have to take on a leadership role or be at every meeting,\u201d Barrow said. \u201cYou always have the freedom to pull back and do less when you need to or even leave a group and try something else if you feel like it isn\u2019t the right fit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second-year graduate student Coleman Simpson has learned a lot about balance during his six years in undergraduate and graduate classes at NC&#160;State. He\u2019s currently completing dual master\u2019s degrees in agricultural and extension education and in public administration while also serving as president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/orgs.ncsu.edu\/student-govt\/legislative\/\">Student Senate<\/a>. In spite of his busy schedule, he says making time for student government and other organizations has been an important way to recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/96-Senate.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/96-Senate-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Coleman Simpson and other members of the Student Senate at a meeting\" class=\"wp-image-519670\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Coleman Simpson (white shirt) and fellow senators at a meeting of the 96th Student Senate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBalance is so important,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cIt comes down to what\u2019s going to fill you up when you need a break from academics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Simpson, this is serving his fellow students by investigating concerns and issues of the student body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing elected by your peers to represent 36,000 students is really cool \u2014 and kind of terrifying,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cI love being able to help my fellow students and will leave campus knowing I made a difference at NC&#160;State.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simpson has also been active in a number of other organizations related to his academic areas, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/agronomyclub\">Agronomy Club<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/18\">Agri-Life Council<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/20\">Agricultural and Extension Education Club<\/a>. In spite of his busy schedule, he says making time for student government and other organizations has been an important way to recharge.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"wide\",\"id\":519670,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"media\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/96-Senate.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/96-Senate-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Coleman Simpson and other members of the Student Senate at a meeting\" class=\"wp-image-519670\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Coleman Simpson (white shirt) and fellow senators at a meeting of the 96th Student Senate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cBalance is so important,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cIt comes down to what\u2019s going to fill you up when you need a break from academics.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For Simpson, this is serving his fellow students by investigating concerns and issues of the student body.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cBeing elected by your peers to represent 36,000 students is really cool \u2014 and kind of terrifying,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cI love being able to help my fellow students and will leave campus knowing I made a difference at NC State.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Simpson has also been active in a number of other organizations related to his academic areas, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/agronomyclub\">Agronomy Club<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/18\">Agri-Life Council<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.ncsu.edu\/organization\/20\">Agricultural and Extension Education Club<\/a>. Through those groups, he got to travel to national conferences, do outreach and even volunteer at the North Carolina State Fair \u2014 memorable experiences he got to share with good friends he met through these groups.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/pullquote {\"value\":\"\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to explore every nook and cranny of the university to find your people.\u201d\",\"textColor\":\"reynolds_400\"} -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-reynolds-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">Don\u2019t be afraid to explore every nook and cranny of the university to find your people.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cOrganizations can always offer you a place for community and fellowship and relationship building,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to explore every nook and cranny of the university to find your people.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Bulala agrees that the effort it takes to find your place is worth it. \u201cI know it\u2019s been really hard to connect this year, but there are orgs out there waiting to welcome you,\u201d she said. \u201cIt may take a little bit of digging, but they\u2019re there.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/highlight {\"teaser\":\"There are so many ways to think and do at NC State.
