A contest is pulling back the curtain to help NC&#160;State researchers share that beauty and excitement with the wider world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to show that there\u2019s more than one way to tell the story of research and reach audiences who might not read a paper,\u201d said Matt Shipman, research communications lead in University Communications and Marketing and the creator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/envisioning.research.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Envisioning Research contest<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The contest, which opens for submissions on <strong>Feb. 4<\/strong>, awards the best visual representations of NC&#160;State research.<\/p>\n<p>Shipman said he was inspired by a similar contest sponsored by the National Science Foundation and <em>Popular Science<\/em> called the Vizzies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI looked at that contest and thought, \u2018We have people who are doing really amazing work that is beautiful to look at. We should do something similar,\u2019\u201d Shipman said.<\/p>\n<p>The competition launched in 2016 as the NC&#160;State Research Image Contest, awarding prizes to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in three categories. In its second year, the contest expanded to include faculty and staff. The 2019 contest will, for the first time, also be open to undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUndergraduates are a key part of the research community at NC&#160;State, and we\u2019re excited for them to share the beautiful and meaningful work they\u2019re producing,\u201d said Vicky Earp, associate director of marketing and outreach in the Office of Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Entrants can submit any image generated in the process of research conducted at NC&#160;State in one of four categories:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Photography (including photos of fieldwork)<\/li>\n<li>Microscopy<\/li>\n<li>Graphics and data visualization<\/li>\n<li>Video and interactive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2018-Impatient-Bumblebee-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"A close-up photograph of a bumblebee pollinating a flower\" class=\"wp-image-483135\"\/><figcaption>Mario Simon Pinilla Gallego&#8217;s 2018 winning photograph, &#8220;Impatient Bumblebee&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a visual element, entrants must submit a caption that explains the image or video and how it helps people understand the world. This underscores the contest\u2019s focus on research communication. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for researchers to think critically about what they do and relate it clearly in both pictures and words,\u201d Earp said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not looking just for pretty pictures,\u201d Shipman said. \u201cThe entries have to help the viewer understand the work and want to learn more about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The panel of judges, which includes graphic design, photography and research experts from across NC&#160;State, awards those who do this most successfully with cash prizes: $250 for first place and $100 for second place in each category.
