{"id":306,"date":"2019-05-21T12:36:38","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T12:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu\/web-platform-free-tier\/2019\/05\/21\/intelligent-life\/"},"modified":"2019-05-21T12:36:38","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T12:36:38","slug":"intelligent-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.ucomm.ncsu.edu\/web-platform-free-tier\/2019\/05\/21\/intelligent-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Intelligent Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since Ana Sofia Uzsoy was a little girl, she\u2019s looked to the stars with wonderment \u2014 and ambition. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to be an astronomer,\u201d Uzsoy says. \u201cI&#8217;ve always loved science.\u201d That love led her to attend the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham and then NC&#160;State, where she became a Park Scholar working toward a double major in physics and computer science. <\/p>\n<p>Now the sophomore can add Goldwater Scholar to her growing r\u00e9sum\u00e9. Uzsoy learned in April that <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2019\/04\/4-win-prestigious-goldwater-scholarship\/\">she was one of four NC&#160;State undergraduates who had won a 2019 Goldwater Scholarship<\/a>, awarded to college students who intend to pursue research careers in science, mathematics or engineering. The highly competitive scholarship provides up to $7,500 per academic year to cover tuition, fees, books, food and housing.<\/p>\n<h2>Tracking a Cause of Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>At NC&#160;State, Uzsoy is doing research in the <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.ncsu.edu\/eltinglab\/\">molecular biophysics lab of Assistant Professor Mary Elting<\/a> to advance our understanding of what makes cells divide improperly. Uzsoy has developed computational tools and image-analysis techniques that automatically track the length of the mitotic spindles that form during cell division. These spindles push the dividing cell\u2019s chromosomes outward into the newly formed daughter cells to ensure that each one gets a full copy of the original cell\u2019s DNA. When errors occur during this process, a host of serious problems can result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFaulty cell division causes a lot of different health issues \u2014 cancers, for one thing, but also miscarriages,\u201d Uzsoy says. \u201cSo if you could narrow down where the faults are occurring in the cell-division process, that would help you develop gene therapies to fix or prevent them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Uzsoy found her way to Elting\u2019s lab as a result of a high school research project she did on astrobiology \u2014 the study of whether life exists, or could exist, elsewhere in the universe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI studied whether microbes could survive the ultraviolet radiation present on the surface of Mars,\u201d Uzsoy says. \u201cEarth has an ozone layer that protects us from a lot of harmful radiation, but Mars doesn\u2019t. That\u2019s one of the biggest hurdles we\u2019ll have to overcome if we\u2019re ever going to figure out how terrestrial life could survive on Mars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the two years Uzsoy spent working on her Mars project, she learned a lot about biology research protocols, which made her a natural fit for Elting\u2019s research at the intersection of physics and biology.<\/p>\n<h2>Studying How Planets Formed<\/h2>\n<p>She hasn\u2019t forgotten her interest in celestial bodies, however. In the summer of 2018 Uzsoy participated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/undergradresearch.dasa.ncsu.edu\/research-opportunities\/nc-state-summer-research-experience-sre-programs\/\">Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/a> in astronomy at the University of Chicago under Assistant Professor Leslie Rogers, studying ultrashort-period exoplanets. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn exoplanet is any planet outside our own solar system, and an ultrashort period is when that planet makes a complete orbit around its sun in less than one Earth day,\u201d Uzsoy explains. \u201cSo all the planets we studied are really close to their host stars, and they\u2019re moving really, really fast. It\u2019s an interesting subpopulation of exoplanets because we don\u2019t know how they formed, although there are a number of theories about it. I worked with Dr. Rogers to analyze exoplanet data captured from the Kepler space telescope so we can start to whittle down those theories and see which ones work best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the summer ended and Uzsoy returned to NC&#160;State for her sophomore year, the exoplanet research project wasn\u2019t finished yet, so she has continued to work on it remotely. Mind you, this is on top of pursuing a double major, minoring in music, playing oboe with the NC&#160;State Woodwind Quintet and serving as a College of Sciences Ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>A student like Uzsoy obviously could have earned admission to lots of good universities, and she did \u2014 so what made her choose NC&#160;State?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally it was the Park Scholarships program,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s how I met Dr. Elting. I had gotten into NC&#160;State, and they offered me a Park; but I\u2019d gotten into some other schools too, so I was weighing my options when Dr. Elting called me. She got her bachelor\u2019s degree from NC&#160;State, and she was a Park Scholar too, so we had a lot to talk about. I looked up her research and liked what I saw, and that kind of sealed the deal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She says her time in the Park Scholarships program and at NC&#160;State has been wonderful. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a really good fit,\u201d she says. \u201cAll my mentors have been amazing. I\u2019m really grateful to them for helping me come out of my shell, and teaching me how to do good research and present it to others.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>For graduate school, Uzsoy intends to pursue a Ph.D. in computational astrophysics. And after that? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I would really like to become a physics professor,\u201d she says, \u201cprobably astrophysics. I&#8217;m still interested in the idea of life in space. I don\u2019t know if the universe is infinite, but it\u2019s definitely big enough that intelligent life has to be out there.
