Follow the progress of the project and learn more about the history of NC&#160;State&#8217;s Legend in Stone.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Caporali, like many of her fellow alumni, left NC&#160;State with lasting friendships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a little more unusual, though, is that she made one very significant connection before even being admitted to the university.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16128\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16128\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16128\" src=\"https:\/\/campaign.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_1887-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Stafford and Emily Caporali in the shrine room\" width=\"350\" height=\"467\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Caporali visited the Shrine Room her senior year of high school.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the fall of her senior year of high school, Caporali and her mother, sister and nephew traveled from Virginia to visit her brother Chris, then a student at NC&#160;State. He brought the family to the Memorial Belltower, where they were taking photos when a man in a suit appeared and offered to take a group picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would turn out to be the first of many significant photos of Caporali at the Belltower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man who offered to take the family\u2019s picture was <a href=\"https:\/\/campaign.ncsu.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/sharing-a-key-to-nc-states-past\/\">Tom Stafford<\/a>, the retired vice chancellor for student affairs. \u201cHe asked about our connection to NC&#160;State,\u201d Caporali said. \u201cMy brother said he was a sophomore and I told him I applied but hadn\u2019t heard back yet.\u201d Stafford then produced a key from his pocket. \u201cHe said that whoever opens the Shrine Room is bound to get into NC&#160;State \u2014 would I like to do it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caporali was excited to open the room, and inside, the family was treated to a shortened version of Stafford\u2019s legendary Belltower tour. Later, when his prediction came true and she was accepted to NC&#160;State, she wrote a thank-you letter to Stafford as part of an AP English writing assignment. He responded, inviting her to participate in an official tour once she was settled in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair didn\u2019t reconnect until Caporali\u2019s second year at NC&#160;State, when she took a Belltower tour during an Impact Leadership Village mentor group activity. Later, she planned another tour as part of her work as a resident adviser on Centennial Campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve just had a great relationship with Dr. Stafford throughout college,\u201d she said. The whole family met Stafford when Chris Caporali, a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/naval.dasa.ncsu.edu\/\">Naval ROTC<\/a> during his career at NC&#160;State, planned the inaugural 9\/11 Memorial Run and asked Stafford to speak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of her friendship with Stafford and her love of the Belltower, when it came time for Caporali to graduate with her degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/sciences.ncsu.edu\">biological sciences<\/a>, she knew the symbolic significance of getting a class ring and placing it in the Shrine Room overnight as part of the Alumni Association\u2019s ring ceremony. However, a ring was an expense that she couldn\u2019t undertake at the time, and she told Stafford via email that she would consider buying one at some point after her December 2017 graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16140\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16140\" src=\"https:\/\/campaign.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ROTC-Military-Ball-Fall-2016-e1558117534281-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Caporali, Dr. Stafford, and Emily Caporali in formal wear\" width=\"400\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Caporali siblings, pictured at the 2016 ROTC Military Ball, appreciate Tom Stafford&#8217;s commitment to students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after that conversation, Caporali ran into Stafford at the Balfour ring table in Talley Student Union. She decided to go say hello and was surprised when Stafford turned to the ring representative and said, \u201cShould we tell her?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing how meaningful a class ring was for Caporali, her friend had decided to purchase one for her \u2014 on one condition. \u201cDr. Stafford said he wanted my whole family to come down for the ceremony,\u201d she said. She assured him that wouldn\u2019t be a problem. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Caporali picked out her ring, and she was the first student at her ceremony to put her box on the ledge in the Shrine Room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, she presented Stafford with a frame containing two photos of the pair: one from that first high school Belltower visit and one from when her graduation photos were taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDr. Stafford has been such a special part of my life at NC&#160;State,\u201d Caporali said. \u201cHe wrote me a letter of recommendation when I applied to PA school.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the connection didn\u2019t quite end at graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February 2018, Caporali and her boyfriend, Chase Timmons, visited Raleigh. Her brother, who is in the Navy and was stationed in Pensacola at the time, was in town, and the three met up for lunch on Hillsborough Street \u2014 parking in the visitor spots by the Belltower, naturally. As they headed up the steps, Caporali watched in surprise as Timmons turned toward the door, pulled out a key and opened the Shrine Room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside sat an open box, displaying an engagement ring.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16131\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16131 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/campaign.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_3055-e1558112138262-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Emily Caporali and Chase Timmons at the belltower\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two special rings: With some careful planning, Emily Caporali and Chase Timmons became engaged at the Belltower.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the flurry of excitement and emotion, the questions started forming. \u201cI was so confused!\u201d she laughed. \u201cWe had just come into town. How did the ring get in the Belltower? How did Chase get a key?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It had taken coordination between Timmons, Chris Caporali and \u2014 of course \u2014 Stafford to set up the ring and hand off the key. \u00a0\u201cDr. Stafford told me, \u2018Now you\u2019ve had two rings spend time in the Belltower,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caporali will start the Master of Physician Assistant Medicine program at the University of Lynchburg this summer, and she and Timmons will be married in Virginia. But whenever she plans a weekend in Raleigh, no visit is complete without a stop at the Belltower. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s symbolic of NC&#160;State,\u201d Caporali said. \u201cIt was dedicated to the lives of alumni lost in World War I. This university is all about the students, and the Belltower is symbolic of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure holds a personal meeting as well, dating back to that fall day during her senior year of high school. \u201cI also think of Dr. Stafford when I think about the Belltower. Both of us are NC state grads and huge NC&#160;State fans! The Belltower has always been special to us as we would celebrate big wins as it was lit red, we would start every single Hillsborough hike at the tower, we took many graduation photos there, and just have so many memories of it from our years at NC&#160;State. We first met on campus, so when my husband decided he was ready to propose, he knew it had to be on campus and the Beltower was the perfect spot! There happened to be someone that noticed what was going on that evening and snapped a few pictures of us. Fast forward an additional six years, after both of us received undergraduate degrees and she got her master&#8217;s, I made the decision to ask her to marry me. I chose to surprise her at the Belltower because NC&#160;State is what brought us together. Being a meteorology major at NC&#160;State, I thought the hectic weather was the perfect way to ask my sweetheart to spend the rest of her life with me. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Caporali picked out her ring, and she was the first student at her ceremony to put her box on the ledge in the Shrine Room.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, she presented Stafford with a frame containing two photos of the pair: one from that first high school Belltower visit and one from when her graduation photos were taken.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDr. Stafford has been such a special part of my life at NC State,\u201d Caporali said. \u201cHe wrote me a letter of recommendation when I applied to PA school.\u201d <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the connection didn\u2019t quite end at graduation.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February 2018, Caporali and her boyfriend, Chase Timmons, visited Raleigh. Her brother, who is in the Navy and was stationed in Pensacola at the time, was in town, and the three met up for lunch on Hillsborough Street \u2014 parking in the visitor spots by the Belltower, naturally. How did the ring get in the Belltower? How did Chase get a key?\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It had taken coordination between Timmons, Chris Caporali and \u2014 of course \u2014 Stafford to set up the ring and hand off the key. \u00a0\u201cDr. Stafford told me, \u2018Now you\u2019ve had two rings spend time in the Belltower,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caporali will start the Master of Physician Assistant Medicine program at the University of Lynchburg this summer, and she and Timmons will be married in Virginia. But whenever she plans a weekend in Raleigh, no visit is complete without a stop at the Belltower. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s symbolic of NC State,\u201d Caporali said. \u201cIt was dedicated to the lives of alumni lost in World War I. This university is all about the students, and the Belltower is symbolic of that.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure holds a personal meeting as well, dating back to that fall day during her senior year of high school. \u201cI also think of Dr. Stafford when I think about the Belltower.
