Add to that a new world of physical distancing, face coverings and CDC guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to mention the possibility that you might not get to attend your first Wolfpack sporting event this year or dine at that pizza place you\u2019ve heard about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a lot to process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/wolfpack-solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wicked Problems, Wolfpack Solutions<\/a>, an innovative online experience for incoming first-year students. As they explore the history, biology and societal impacts of pandemics like COVID-19, students are learning how NC&#160;State faculty in many different areas are contributing to solutions to this \u201cwicked\u201d problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to learning the subject matter, they\u2019re also getting a bit of a primer on what it\u2019s like to be an NC&#160;State student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Louis Hunt, senior vice provost for enrollment management and services and one of the course visionaries, says it started as a way of creating community and staying connected with incoming first-year students during a global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he and his team quickly realized it could accomplish much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course has multiple objectives: engage students in quality online education, provide guidance on their transition to the academic realities of higher education, help them view their college education through a multidisciplinary lens, and give them experience with the learning technologies they\u2019ll use in their classes this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the icing on the cake? After finishing the five-week program, students will earn two general education credit hours at no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBottom line, we wanted to showcase some of our best faculty, show these students the breadth of NC&#160;State&#8217;s knowledge and expertise, and get them excited about becoming part of the NC&#160;State community,\u201d Hunt says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/wicked-problems-2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-509994\" \/><figcaption>Associate producers Todd Buker (front, with bandana) and Michael Castro work on course videos at DELTA&#8217;s Park Shops studio.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DELTA Senior Instructional Designer Cathi Dunnagan, who, according to many involved in the course, is \u201cthe connection between all the moving parts,\u201d echoes Hunt\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery person on this team has been dedicated to creating an exceptional, engaging experience for our incoming first-year students,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the participation numbers, it appears they\u2019ve succeeded in doing just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Jane Lubischer, biological sciences associate department head, who serves as course co-coordinator with professor Melissa Ramirez, participation in the course is growing each week, with 3,478 incoming first-year students having accessed it to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith some 4,900 students invited to join in, this course is unlike anything we have done before at NC&#160;State,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How it Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students navigate through the course Moodle site at their own pace, following a format that encourages them to explore, engage and apply. Each of the five weeks covers a different aspect of the pandemic, from examining the current crisis to brainstorming solutions for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve designed it to be a threaded story,\u201d says Christopher Beeson, a DELTA instructional technologist who also serves as a course designer and facilitator. \u201cWe want it to feel more like a conversation than a course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content for each week is unlocked every Monday at 8 a.m. Students who start late or fall behind must finish each week\u2019s tasks before they can advance in the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topics covered are drawn from a wide range of disciplines, from archaeology to systems engineering. In one hands-on project during the third week, students received a citizen science kit in the mail inviting them to test the water quality in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the size of the course does limit some of what we can do, we are trying to share back with students the thoughts and concerns and ideas being expressed by the class as a whole,\u201d Lubischer says. \u201cThis reinforces their wide diversity of experiences and perspectives as well as their commonalities (e.g., being both excited and nervous about starting college).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Warp Speed\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d think, as complex as this course is, that it took months or even years to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nope. Try five weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And dozens of people are still working tirelessly behind the scenes to produce the final content elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can honestly say this has been the most incredible experience of my instructional design career,\u201d Dunnagan says. \u201cBy the calendar, we had five weeks to create a brand new course. At an all-hands meeting on May 1, Miller shared Hunt\u2019s vision for the course and challenged his team by asking, \u201cIs DELTA all in?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer, Dunnagan says, was a resounding yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She coordinated across the team\u2019s five working groups \u2014 communications, content, graphics, instructional design and evaluation \u2014 that \u201callowed us to take off at full speed on all paths at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By May 13, the team had defined the vision and goals for the project, and by the 15th, they had developed the production timeline for an ambitious June 22 launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had two parallel efforts going at the same time \u2014 both going at warp speed,\u201d Hunt says. \u201cRob Dunn, Jane Lubischer and Melissa Ramirez were developing the course concepts and recruiting experts from across campus to participate, while Cathi Dunnagan, John Gordon, Todd Buker and many others from DELTA worked to ensure that the production of the course was something we could all be proud to have represent NC&#160;State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt took a lot of collaboration across the campus, from the budget office to the university&#8217;s course and curriculum committee, everyone had a part to play,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was quite a challenge, and everyone involved really rose to the occasion and made it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dunn agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe team has been amazing,\u201d he says. \u201cI&#8217;ve been able to focus on the things I&#8217;m good at and been able to be comfortable letting other people focus on what they are best at. That is teamwork at its most effective. It isn&#8217;t common that it works that way. I was lucky to be invited to work on a project with such an awesome team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IPGE-295-Chancellor-1500x844-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"chancellor being filmed for a video\" class=\"wp-image-509992\" \/><figcaption>Chancellor Randy Woodson films a closing video called &#8220;Protecting the Pack.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Students Weigh In<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to weekly student surveys within the course, it\u2019s a hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo far the feedback we have heard is overwhelmingly positive,\u201d Dunn says. \u201cThe young people engaged in the class are excited about the class, about learning, and about fields they didn&#8217;t know existed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DELTA evaluation working group developed pre- and post-course surveys as well as weekly surveys within the course, Dunnagan says. They also will create an evaluation report after the project\u2019s conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from about 2,200 responses collected across four weeks reveals positive feedback on many of the course elements. Students say the videos and podcasts are well-paced, engaging and interesting. The weekly livestream events also are getting high marks, with 78% of participants describing them as engaging, and 92% saying they are informative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WPWS-Wordcloud-1500-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"word cloud\" class=\"wp-image-509920\" \/><figcaption>This word cloud represents the answers students gave when asked to create a list of all the disciplines they&#8217;ve learned about in the course. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another success is that there have been \u201camazingly few technical difficulties, thanks to DELTA,\u201d Lubischer says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Course designers are trying to be as clear and detailed as possible with the content to prevent an avalanche of questions from the students, Beeson says. A robust <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/wolfpack-solutions\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online FAQ<\/a> also helps the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt says a lot that there have been less than 20 questions so far, out of a few thousand students,\u201d Beeson says. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s a huge win.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solving More \u2018Wicked Problems\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s next after the course wraps on July 24? At an all-hands meeting on May 1, Miller shared Hunt\u2019s vision for the course and challenged his team by asking, \u201cIs DELTA all in?\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The answer, Dunnagan says, was a resounding yes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>She coordinated across the team\u2019s five working groups \u2014 communications, content, graphics, instructional design and evaluation \u2014 that \u201callowed us to take off at full speed on all paths at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>By May 13, the team had defined the vision and goals for the project, and by the 15th, they had developed the production timeline for an ambitious June 22 launch.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cWe had two parallel efforts going at the same time \u2014 both going at warp speed,\u201d Hunt says. \u201cRob Dunn, Jane Lubischer and Melissa Ramirez were developing the course concepts and recruiting experts from across campus to participate, while Cathi Dunnagan, John Gordon, Todd Buker and many others from DELTA worked to ensure that the production of the course was something we could all be proud to have represent NC State.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cIt took a lot of collaboration across the campus, from the budget office to the university's course and curriculum committee, everyone had a part to play,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was quite a challenge, and everyone involved really rose to the occasion and made it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Dunn agrees.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThe team has been amazing,\u201d he says. \u201cI've been able to focus on the things I'm good at and been able to be comfortable letting other people focus on what they are best at. That is teamwork at its most effective. It isn't common that it works that way. I was lucky to be invited to work on a project with such an awesome team.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":509992,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IPGE-295-Chancellor-1500x844-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"chancellor being filmed for a video\" class=\"wp-image-509992\" \/><figcaption>Chancellor Randy Woodson films a closing video called \"Protecting the Pack.\"<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>The Students Weigh In<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>According to weekly student surveys within the course, it\u2019s a hit.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cSo far the feedback we have heard is overwhelmingly positive,\u201d Dunn says. \u201cThe young people engaged in the class are excited about the class, about learning, and about fields they didn't know existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The DELTA evaluation working group developed pre- and post-course surveys as well as weekly surveys within the course, Dunnagan says. They also will create an evaluation report after the project\u2019s conclusion.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Data from about 2,200 responses collected across four weeks reveals positive feedback on many of the course elements. Students say the videos and podcasts are well-paced, engaging and interesting. The weekly livestream events also are getting high marks, with 78% of participants describing them as engaging, and 92% saying they are informative.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":509920,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WPWS-Wordcloud-1500-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"word cloud\" class=\"wp-image-509920\" \/><figcaption>This word cloud represents the answers students gave when asked to create a list of all the disciplines they've learned about in the course. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Another success is that there have been \u201camazingly few technical difficulties, thanks to DELTA,\u201d Lubischer says.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Course designers are trying to be as clear and detailed as possible with the content to prevent an avalanche of questions from the students, Beeson says. A robust <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/wolfpack-solutions\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online FAQ<\/a> also helps the cause.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cIt says a lot that there have been less than 20 questions so far, out of a few thousand students,\u201d Beeson says. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s a huge win.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>Solving More \u2018Wicked Problems\u2019<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>So, what\u2019s next after the course wraps on July 24?
