Thomas Stafford, who served as vice chancellor of student affairs for nearly 30 years and now serves as NC&#160;State\u2019s unofficial Memorial Belltower tour guide, firmly believes that. He\u2019s even played a key role in several NC&#160;State love stories. Over the years, Stafford has helped coordinate seven proposals inside the university\u2019s iconic landmark. It started several years ago when a young alumnus asked his permission to propose to his girlfriend at the Belltower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI told him he didn\u2019t need anyone\u2019s permission to do that,\u201d said Stafford. \u201cBut I could offer him something that might be a little bit better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">He met the alumnus the day before the proposal and took him inside the Belltower. They left the engagement ring sitting overnight below the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/belltower\/\">memorial plaque<\/a> \u2014 which honors the 34 NC&#160;State alumni who lost their lives in military service during World War I \u2014 so it could soak up the spirit of the Wolfpack. Stafford met with him again the next day to hand off the key so the alumnus could propose in the Shrine Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cAfter I\u2019d done two or three proposals like that one, I began to include those stories in my Belltower tour,\u201d said Stafford. \u201cOver the years, hundreds and hundreds of people have heard me tell those stories, and they\u2019ve spread through word of mouth. That&#8217;s why I still get requests to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nick and Olivia: A Key Proposal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Nick Livengood \u201821 is one of the people who heard the proposal stories during one of Stafford\u2019s Belltower tours. He met his now-fiancee, Olivia Bradley \u201820, at Bragaw Hall when they were both first-year students at NC&#160;State. On the day of the supposed tour, he arrived early to pick up the key from Stafford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">When she arrived, Bradley was surprised to find she and Livengood were the only ones there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI handed her the key and said \u2018I was able to pull some strings. Why don&#8217;t we go inside and take a look?\u2019\u201d said Livengood. \u201cIt worked out really well the way Dr. Stafford and I planned it, where the Shrine Room was nice and dark when Olivia and I opened the door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">When Livengood turned on the light that illuminates the plaque, Bradley saw her engagement ring sitting right in front of it. Livengood got down on one knee, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">There\u2019s a feeling of community at NC&#160;State that\u2019s unique compared to other college campuses.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Stafford says that when a ring \u2014 whether it be a class ring or an engagement ring \u2014 spends the night inside the Belltower, it becomes imbued with the unique characteristics of NC&#160;State. These characteristics \u2014 commitment to service, leadership and excellence \u2014 are what Livengood and Bradley love most about their alma mater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cThere\u2019s a feeling of community at NC&#160;State that\u2019s unique compared to other college campuses,\u201d said Livengood. \u201cThere&#8217;s an unspoken theme of looking out for each other and being respectful. I believe that theme has been carried right into our relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mackenzie and Amber: Snow Place Like Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">In seventh grade, classmates Amber King &#8217;19 (nee Black) and Mackenzie King \u201819 used to Skype about wanting to go to NC&#160;State together. In a full-circle moment, they got engaged at the Belltower in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default left-aside\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">NC&#160;State is where we reconnected and became who we are as adults.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">They had lost touch after ending up at different high schools. But during her sophomore year at NC&#160;State, Amber came across a Facebook photo of Mackenzie wearing an NC&#160;State meteorology T-shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI ended up messaging him on Facebook, and it turns out he\u2019d just transferred from Appalachian State University that year,\u201d said Amber. \u201cI asked him to get coffee, and we\u2019ve been inseparable ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">They would often go on walks together around campus; Mackenzie would pick up Amber from class at Poe Hall and they\u2019d pass the Belltower. One snowy January day during their junior year, Mackenzie asked Amber to go on one of their usual walks. He picked her up at Wolf Village and they headed toward the Belltower. But she sensed something was different this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-ncst-image-grid\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mackenzie-amber-proposal.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mackenzie-amber-proposal-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"A newly engaged couple kissing in front of the Memorial Belltower\" class=\"wp-image-542511\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amber and Mackenzie King got engaged at the Belltower in 2018. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cHe kept fiddling with his pocket, and I knew it wasn\u2019t his keys,\u201d said Amber. \u201cI could tell I was making him nervous because I kept asking what was in his pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">When they arrived at the Belltower, with snow swirling and students strolling all around them, Mackenzie popped the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cBeing a meteorology major, the hectic weather was the perfect way to ask her to spend the rest of her life with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">The two got married in October 2019 and have gone on to pursue careers in public education and meteorology, but NC&#160;State is still their special place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cIt\u2019s where we reconnected and became who we are as adults. It\u2019s where we decided to start our lives together,\u201d said Amber. \u201cAnd Mackenzie\u2019s family is from Raleigh and they\u2019re NC&#160;State born and bred people \u2014 they watch every football game and every basketball game. So it\u2019s home for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jacob and Lauren: Drumline, Please<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Jacob Weber \u201820 and Lauren Wright \u201813 both started school at NC&#160;State in 2009, but their paths wouldn\u2019t cross \u2014 at least not directly \u2014 for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Weber, who was in the Army at the time, left school to serve in Afghanistan and returned in 2016 to complete his degree in civil engineering. In 2017, he met Wright on a blind date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cA coworker of mine was dating one of his really close friends, so she set us up,\u201d said Wright. \u201cBut when we met, we were both like, \u2018You look so familiar.\u2019 We swear we had to have crossed paths at least once in the Brickyard. We&#8217;re convinced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">They still bond over their shared love of NC&#160;State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cWe just love it. We love the close-knit community, the people we&#8217;ve met through State and our education. We wouldn&#8217;t be where we are without it,\u201d said Wright. \u201cNC&#160;State is in everyday conversation for us. When he was preparing to propose last November, he knew the steps of the Belltower would be the perfect place to take the next step in their relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">To keep Wright\u2019s suspicions about the proposal at bay, Weber told her he was taking her on a day date. On their way to downtown Raleigh, he told her he wanted to make a quick stop at the Belltower to check out a new plaque honoring veterans that had served in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cHe tricked me. I know it\u2019s an alumni military memorial, so I didn\u2019t think much of it,\u201d said Wright. \u201cWhen we got there, I was circling around the Belltower searching for this plaque that didn\u2019t exist. When I came back around, he got down on one knee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default right-aside\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">I loved the proposal because NC&#160;State has always been a big part of my life.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">That wasn&#8217;t the only surprise Weber had for her that day. After the proposal, the NC&#160;State drumline came out and played. Wright, who was in the drumline for two years, was thrilled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I started jumping around and dancing when I heard the drums. This is always my reaction for NC&#160;State&#8217;s drumline and marching band,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Once Jacob told me they were there specifically for us, I cried. It was so exciting and special.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a moment she&#8217;ll never forget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI loved the proposal because NC&#160;State has always been a big part of my life,\u201d said Wright. \u201cMy older sister and my dad also went to NC&#160;State. I got my class ring from the Belltower. And now I have my forever ring from the Belltower.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;The Most Sacred Place at NC&#160;State&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">For Stafford, seeing a Belltower proposal never gets old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cTo me, these proposals make the Belltower an even more special place,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is the most beautiful, the most iconic and the most sacred place at NC&#160;State. On the day of the supposed tour, he arrived early to pick up the key from Stafford.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">When she arrived, Bradley was surprised to find she and Livengood were the only ones there.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI handed her the key and said \u2018I was able to pull some strings. Why don't we go inside and take a look?\u2019\u201d said Livengood. \u201cIt worked out really well the way Dr. Stafford and I planned it, where the Shrine Room was nice and dark when Olivia and I opened the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">When Livengood turned on the light that illuminates the plaque, Bradley saw her engagement ring sitting right in front of it. These characteristics \u2014 commitment to service, leadership and excellence \u2014 are what Livengood and Bradley love most about their alma mater.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cThere\u2019s a feeling of community at NC State that\u2019s unique compared to other college campuses,\u201d said Livengood. \u201cThere's an unspoken theme of looking out for each other and being respectful. I believe that theme has been carried right into our relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Mackenzie and Amber: Snow Place Like Home<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">In seventh grade, classmates Amber King '19 (nee Black) and Mackenzie King \u201819 used to Skype about wanting to go to NC State together. In a full-circle moment, they got engaged at the Belltower in 2018.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/aside-widget {\"alignment\":\"left\"} -->\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default left-aside\"><!-- wp:ncst\/pullquote {\"value\":\"\\u0022NC State is where we reconnected and became who we are as adults.\\u0022\",\"textColor\":\"indigo_400\"} -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">NC State is where we reconnected and became who we are as adults.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote --><\/aside>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/aside-widget -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">They had lost touch after ending up at different high schools. But during her sophomore year at NC State, Amber came across a Facebook photo of Mackenzie wearing an NC State meteorology T-shirt.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI ended up messaging him on Facebook, and it turns out he\u2019d just transferred from Appalachian State University that year,\u201d said Amber. \u201cI asked him to get coffee, and we\u2019ve been inseparable ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">They would often go on walks together around campus; Mackenzie would pick up Amber from class at Poe Hall and they\u2019d pass the Belltower. One snowy January day during their junior year, Mackenzie asked Amber to go on one of their usual walks. He picked her up at Wolf Village and they headed toward the Belltower. But she sensed something was different this time.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/image-grid -->\n<section class=\"wp-block-ncst-image-grid\"><!-- wp:image {\"id\":542511,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"media\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mackenzie-amber-proposal.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mackenzie-amber-proposal-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"A newly engaged couple kissing in front of the Memorial Belltower\" class=\"wp-image-542511\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amber and Mackenzie King got engaged at the Belltower in 2018. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image --><\/section>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/image-grid -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cHe kept fiddling with his pocket, and I knew it wasn\u2019t his keys,\u201d said Amber. \u201cI could tell I was making him nervous because I kept asking what was in his pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">When they arrived at the Belltower, with snow swirling and students strolling all around them, Mackenzie popped the question.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cBeing a meteorology major, the hectic weather was the perfect way to ask her to spend the rest of her life with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">The two got married in October 2019 and have gone on to pursue careers in public education and meteorology, but NC State is still their special place.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cIt\u2019s where we reconnected and became who we are as adults. It\u2019s where we decided to start our lives together,\u201d said Amber. \u201cAnd Mackenzie\u2019s family is from Raleigh and they\u2019re NC State born and bred people \u2014 they watch every football game and every basketball game. So it\u2019s home for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Jacob and Lauren: Drumline, Please<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Jacob Weber \u201820 and Lauren Wright \u201813 both started school at NC State in 2009, but their paths wouldn\u2019t cross \u2014 at least not directly \u2014 for several years.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Weber, who was in the Army at the time, left school to serve in Afghanistan and returned in 2016 to complete his degree in civil engineering. In 2017, he met Wright on a blind date.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cA coworker of mine was dating one of his really close friends, so she set us up,\u201d said Wright. \u201cBut when we met, we were both like, \u2018You look so familiar.\u2019 We swear we had to have crossed paths at least once in the Brickyard. We're convinced.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">They still bond over their shared love of NC State.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cWe just love it. We love the close-knit community, the people we've met through State and our education. We wouldn't be where we are without it,\u201d said Wright. \u201cNC State is in everyday conversation for us. When he was preparing to propose last November, he knew the steps of the Belltower would be the perfect place to take the next step in their relationship.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">To keep Wright\u2019s suspicions about the proposal at bay, Weber told her he was taking her on a day date. On their way to downtown Raleigh, he told her he wanted to make a quick stop at the Belltower to check out a new plaque honoring veterans that had served in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cHe tricked me. I know it\u2019s an alumni military memorial, so I didn\u2019t think much of it,\u201d said Wright. \u201cWhen we got there, I was circling around the Belltower searching for this plaque that didn\u2019t exist. When I came back around, he got down on one knee.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/aside-widget -->\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default right-aside\"><!-- wp:ncst\/pullquote {\"value\":\"\\u0022I loved the proposal because NC State has always been a big part of my life.\\u0022\",\"textColor\":\"indigo_400\"} -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">I loved the proposal because NC State has always been a big part of my life.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote --><\/aside>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/aside-widget -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">That wasn't the only surprise Weber had for her that day. After the proposal, the NC State drumline came out and played. Wright, who was in the drumline for two years, was thrilled. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\"I started jumping around and dancing when I heard the drums. This is always my reaction for NC State's drumline and marching band,\" she said. \"Once Jacob told me they were there specifically for us, I cried. It was so exciting and special.\"&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>It's a moment she'll never forget. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cI loved the proposal because NC State has always been a big part of my life,\u201d said Wright. \u201cMy older sister and my dad also went to NC State. I got my class ring from the Belltower. And now I have my forever ring from the Belltower.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>'The Most Sacred Place at NC State'<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">For Stafford, seeing a Belltower proposal never gets old.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"is-style-default\"} -->\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cTo me, these proposals make the Belltower an even more special place,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is the most beautiful, the most iconic and the most sacred place at NC State.
